S02E16 Q Who

Q throws the Enterprise into uncharted space where it encounters and is engaged by a vessel of a previously unknown species: the Borg. When the vessel instantly and effortlessly overwhelms the Enterprise, Picard realizes that the Federation may not be as ready for the future as he thought.

Probably not good news.

Quote:  “If you can’t take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It’s not safe out here. It’s wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross, but it’s not for the timid.”

  1. It has been a long time! I love the podcast and I hope you will continue to do a lot more! Q Who is a great episode and I really enjoyed it. I also must say that I really enjoy that you two know the real science and I learn a lot. Thank you so much!

  2. Great to hear the podcast again. Your remarks about the hive mind and how we are all becoming more connected reminds me, at the time I first saw this episode, when it was first broadcast in the UK in 1991, that even if I knew we were watching the show two years behind the US screenings I certainly didn’t know anything about what was to come, such as The Best of Both Worlds episode, which had already been shown in the US. Which is unthinkable nowadays where we know what is happening everywhere right away; nicely illustrating how the internet has made us so much more connected now.

Something not mentioned in the podcast: this amusing exchange between Riker and Data; well it made me snigger anyway:

RIKER: I want to begin a methodical search. Data, use our present location as a centre. Plot a search pattern from these coordinates to cover the most area in the least time.
DATA: Search pattern has been input, sir.
DATA: We have covered the area in a spherical pattern which a vessel without warp drive could traverse in the time allotted.

  3. Absolutely love Q Who! Definitely deserves special attention in The Rewatch, and this alternative format worked well for it. Great fun, and great to have you guys back as well!

  4. Another great episode!

As to the reason a Cube is closer, and there’s one in the Neutral Zone, that was set up (retroactively) by the Enterprise episode. The ones from First Contact get revived, take over a few ships and send a signal to the Delta Quadrant. T’Pol says it’d take about 80 years to reach it’s destination. So basically TNG season 2 is when the Borg received the signal and started towards the source.
